Jezebel James Fan Reactions: Part 1

Sat, 03/15/2008 - 3:17am
Submitted by TimK

I’ve been browsing my RSS feeds for fan reactions to The Return of Jezebel James. Lots of non-fans hated the show—because they hated the actresses, or they hated the laugh track, or they hated the writing. What it boiled down to, I think, is that non-fans just don’t get it, which makes sense, because they’re non-fans. One woman was even majorly offended that Sarah is infertile, because infertility is not funny, and therefore it’s an inappropriate subject for a comedy—just as it was inappropriate for Hawkeye to make jokes about bombs blowing up people, or for Roseanne to make fun of poor, dysfunctional families. (Uh, that last part was my commentary, not hers.)

But there are so far a number of fans who enjoyed the premier and said so. Here’s the first batch of links to bloggers who had interesting things to say about the premier of The Return of Jezebel James. Click to continue »

Jezebel James: 127 Laughs in 44 Minutes

I just finished watching the 2-episode premier of The Return of Jezebel James. I recorded it from earlier in the evening, because I have kids, who wouldn’t let me watch in peace. But I did get to watch, and I counted how many times I laughed during the 44 minutes of programming. I laughed 60 times during the first episode, and an additional 7 during the second, totaling 127 laughs in 44 minutes.

But what impressed me most was something other than the humor. Five things, actually. Or at least I made 5 notes while I was watching. Click to continue »

I managed to Netflix 5 Parker Posey movies over the summer, plus a whole season of Six Feet Under. My one-line review of Six Feet Under: Disturbing, except for the parts that are morbid, but with deep characterization.

But back to the Parker Posey movies. Here’s my first batch of one-line Parker Posey reviews. Click to continue »

Lauren Ambrose in Starting Out in the Evening

From the time I first heard of this film, I wanted to see it. No word yet on when it’s coming to DVD. And all I know of it’s release on the big screen is that we can expect a “limited” release on November 23. So there’s a chance that it might come to the theatre down the street from me, which shows many independent films.

In the meantime, of course, I could read the novel. And here are a number of reviews from the screening of Starting Out in the Evening at the Toronto International Film Festival last week. Click to continue »

The Story of How G.C. Got to Review Broken English

G.C. watched Broken English at the Seattle International Film Festival. Except that he almost wasn’t able to get in. But fortunately for us, he did get in, and he was able to write a review of the film, and to tell us the story.

Funny enough, the Mrs. and I almost weren’t able to see the film. We arrived at the theater around 8:20pm (it was a 9:30pm showing) to buy tickets and it was already sold out. I could tell instantly on Shiv’s face that she was disappointed, especially since seeing Broken English was originally her pick. As we turned around to walk away…

An Evening with Broken English and Parker Posey

Tue, 06/12/2007 - 8:17pm

Gregory of Glögg tells the story of his night watching Broken English:

First, let us introduce the speakers: There’s mighty writer F.X. Feeney on the left, Broken English writer-director Zoe Cassavetes in the middle, and the inimitable Parker Posey on the right.

Introductions thus established, let us say that it was A Rousing Evening For Smart Independent Cinema. Going in cold, I certainly didn’t know what to expect…

Zoe has delivered here a remarkably unpretentious movie which firmly places Soul over Style — plus a project that the hopeless devotees of Sex and the City and I can probably enjoy equally — and friends, that is saying something.
